How to choose a glass for a cocktail smoker
The ritual
A good rocks glass is the ideal starting point: a solid base, a level rim and room for the smoke to settle above your drink.

Check the fit first
Set the empty glass on a level surface. Rest the wooden disc across the rim, then place the barrel on the disc. Everything should sit securely, without rocking or tipping. Check this before pouring your drink.
Choose a stable glass
- A rocks or Old Fashioned glass offers a broad rim and a sturdy base.
- A low tumbler can work just as well when the disc sits level across it.
- For a warm drink, choose heatproof glassware and check the fit before use.
Serving in a coupe or tall glass
Smoke the drink in a stable rocks glass, then pour it into your chosen serving glass. This lets you use a favourite coupe, martini glass or highball without balancing the smoker on a narrow rim or delicate stem.
Prepare the glass
- Chill the serving glass before mixing a cold cocktail.
- Keep the rim dry so the disc rests securely.
- Place the glass on a firm, level surface with room to set down the torch.
