How to clean and store a cocktail smoker
The ritual
A quick clean after use keeps the wood looking its best and the screen ready for your next pour.

After each use
- Let the smoker and spent chips cool completely.
- Empty the spent chips into a suitable non-flammable container.
- Brush loose ash from the screen and wipe the wood with a dry cloth.
For a closer clean
- Lift off the top half of the barrel and remove the cooled metal screen.
- Clean the screen with a soft brush. If you rinse it with warm water, dry it completely.
- Wipe the barrel’s well and the underside of the disc with a barely damp cloth.
- Leave every part to air-dry fully before reassembling.
Care for the wood
- Clean wooden parts by hand, using a dry or barely damp cloth.
- Keep the barrel and disc out of standing water and the dishwasher.
- Keep detergent off the wood to avoid leaving a scent.
- Use a soft brush on the screen to protect the mesh.
Changing woods
Before moving from Walnut to Pear, for example, empty the cooled chips and brush away the ash. Wipe the well, then add a fresh pinch of your next wood.
Store it ready for next time
Choose a dry shelf or cupboard away from direct sunlight and heat. Close each wood tin after use, and make sure the smoker is completely cool and dry before putting it away.
