Ingredients
- 2 oz bourbon or rye
- 1 sugar cube or ½ oz simple syrup
- 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 large ice cube
- 1 strip of orange peel
- A small pinch of your chosen wood chips
Make the cocktail
- Muddle the sugar cube with the bitters and a splash of water in a stable rocks glass. If using syrup, stir it with the bitters instead.
- Add the whiskey and large ice cube. Stir until the outside of the glass feels cold.
- Rest the disc securely on the rim and place the barrel horizontally on top. Lift off its upper half and add the chips to the screen.
- Light the chips with the butane torch. Remove the flame once they smoulder and let the smoke collect for about 30 seconds.
- Lift the smoker. Twist the orange peel over the glass to release its oils, then add it to the drink.
Try it with maple
Replace the sugar with ½ oz pure maple syrup for a warmer, rounded sweetness. See the Smoked Maple Old Fashioned for the full recipe.
